The Realization of Happiness
What is Self-Mastery?
Upon your planet, happiness is one of the emotions that is most sought after over and above all others except perhaps the emotion of satisfaction and the emotion of what is thought of as the feeling of love.
The realization of happiness is part and parcel, as it were, of the journey towards mastery. That is not to say that mastery itself is about learning and realizing how to be happy. Rather, upon the journey to becoming what you call ‘a master’ is the realization of happiness, meaning the dawning upon one’s consciousness of what the state of happiness entails in any individual’s life.
Describing Happiness
Most often the state of happiness is directly connected to the satisfying of a need, a belief, a judgment, or the internal structure on which one builds one’s life, would you understand?
And so most often, in the life of a human, there is this spark of energy that fuels the dedication of the self to discover happiness at all costs because it has been predetermined in your culture that happiness is much more satisfactory than sadness or grief or any other emotion; that happiness is an emotion and a state of being that allows one to get along at all costs. It is this idea of ‘get along at all costs’ that we are addressing in this teaching.
In your culture is woven the idea that happiness depends on ‘getting along at all costs.’ However, if one carries within oneself, as do the majority of the people on your planet when they turn their mind towards the acquisition of happiness, the goal to ‘get along at all costs’, it can put at risk your values, your morals, and your destiny.
How is that possible?
Because happiness, you see, has such a cultural judgment attached to it that it has been determined to be the emotion that lets you know you have arrived, as it were:
If you are married and you are happy, then it is a good relationship.
If you have a job and you are happy, then you are well-placed, and you are functioning within the cogs of the wheel, as it were.
If you are living in a home that you enjoy and it brings you happiness, then you have bought well, or you have furnished well.
If you have family and they are happy when they are with you and you are happy when you are with them, then you have developed into such a wonderful person, or they have developed into such marvelous entities.
If you are in school and the teacher is happy with your progress, then you have shown dedication and persistence and intelligence.
The realization of happiness in your culture is equated with a pat on the head, a pat on the shoulder, a raise, people longing to be with you and to be around you. It is associated with what you might call the good things in life. And so it is that each person on your planet, each person upon your planet, strives for happiness. They believe that happiness IS the acknowledgement of having arrived, as it were, at the goal, whatever the “goal” is.
Balance on a Polarity Planet
But what if you lived, as you have, on a polarity planet and happiness was one end of the spectrum, meaning that unhappiness was at the other end of the spectrum? Then where is mastery? Is it not in the middle? Is it not in the point that you call the zero point? Is it not in the vesica pisces where one has the option to express happiness or to express unhappiness? One has the permission from oneself to experience any given emotion and to return, as it were, to the center, to balance.
Upon your planet, the center or balance, with the exception of those who have been studying, writing and teaching about, has been looked upon as a position of laziness, of non-participation, of separation or isolation. If a person on your planet sits within the zero point, in terms of the linear expression of unhappiness versus happiness, more often than not, the outer world looks at that person and thinks something is wrong with them, for they are not expressing happiness, would you understand?
It is not so disconcerting when an individual is in the realm of unhappiness, for everyone wants that energy to be dissipated, to get out of that space at all costs. “Come over here where I’m happy!” But that is just the other end of the spectrum, and when the metronome swings back and forth from one end to the other end, neither end is balanced. Each end is simply an expression, and all of the little tics and tocs in between are all places of expression.
Happiness as an Illusion of Mastery
So the thought now given unto your beings is “If you hold happiness as the gong that you are trying to hit, the bell, so that you achieve happiness and you know you have achieved and you know you have succeeded, that is an illusion.” It is an illusion that living in the state of happiness, at least in terms of the emotional state of happiness, equals mastery, equals “I have arrived” and equals “All is well, and I have achieved all there is to achieve.”
Happiness has been a barometer; it has been hidden upon your planet under things like “achievements”: if you are academic and striving for the greatest attainment you can have, perhaps a PhD or other recognition, you may believe you will have your happiness with that achievement. However, that is just one end of the spectrum. It is not the central point.
Perhaps you are a chef in a restaurant and your happiness is when a customer comes into the kitchen to give you a compliment and a tip. You are happy because you have satisfied someone. That is still one end of the spectrum.
This conversation is not to say that happiness is not an emotion to strive for. Neither is it to say it is not an emotion to achieve. It is rather to equate the striving of happiness to the striving of other situations as well. The striving of materialism. The striving for attractiveness. The striving of acceptance. Would you understand?
And so it is that within each one of you there has been this seed of “I must achieve happiness.” And each of you have sought it in your own ways. And each of you have thought that when you were in the space of happiness, you had achieved self-mastery.
And that is the purpose for tonight’s discussion: to understand what, indeed, is self-mastery?
If one takes away the idea that when you are happy all the time then you must have mastered every emotion that there is that could possibly topple you off of your heap of happiness, one must also topple the idea that if you are not happy there is something wrong with you and you could not possibly be manifesting mastery.
